Baby Constipation | Home Remedies And Treatment For Baby's Constipation

Constipation is a condition where stools become firmer and harder. Your child will be troubled or in pain when they need to empty their bowels, and the bowels will not be emptied as often as usual.

Bowel movement in newborns

It is equally normal for a young baby to have a bowel movement several times a day or as little as once a week. In rare cases, there can be up to three weeks between bowel movements.

A young baby should only be given a laxative if he or she is bothered by the long intervals between bowel movements.

Breastfed babies usually have frequent bowel movements until they are two to three months old. Their stools are typically yellow.

How can I treat my baby's constipation?

Here are some things to try:

Get her some exercise. If your baby's a crawler, encourage her to do a few laps. If she's not crawling yet, try pumping her legs: While she's lying on her back, gently move her legs in a forward, circular motion as if she were pedaling a bicycle.

Massage your baby's belly. Measure three finger-widths below her navel and apply gentle but firm pressure with your fingertips. Press until you feel a firmness or mass. Maintain gentle but constant pressure for about three minutes.

If you feed your baby formula, ask her doctor about switching to a different brand. Some babies are less constipated on soy formula. And sometimes adding a teaspoon of Karo corn syrup to the formula also does the trick.

Switch from rice cereal to barley or oat cereal, or add pureed fruits or vegetables to her regular cereal, once your baby is ready for them. Read about what foods to introduce when.

Once your baby is eating a variety of solid foods, ask her doctor if you can boost her fiber intake by adding a teaspoon of bran to her cereal. Cut down on constipating foods like rice, bananas, and cooked carrots, and try mixing her cereal with a little bit of apple or prune juice or a few tablespoons of pureed prunes, apricots, or pears to help loosen her bowel movements.

Increase the amount of fluid your baby drinks to help keep her stools soft. If your baby is older than 2 months, start by giving her 1 ounce of prune juice diluted with 1 ounce of water, twice a day. As her constipation improves, you can cut back. Talk with the doctor first if your baby is 2 months old or younger.

Talk to your baby's doctor about treatment options. Ask about using an over-the-counter stool softener to make bowel movements more comfortable for your baby, but never give your baby a laxative without her doctor's approval. The doctor may also suggest you try a glycerin suppository if your baby is severely constipated. The suppository will stimulate the rectum and help her pass a stool. While using a suppository occasionally is fine, don't do it on a regular basis, since your baby could wind up relying on them to have a bowel movement.

If your baby is passing such hard, dry stools that she tears the delicate skin near the opening of her anus (you may be able to see these tears, known as anal fissures, or a little blood), you can apply some aloe vera lotion to the area to help it heal. Be sure to mention the tears to your baby's doctor.

Treating Infant Constipation Gently And Safely

In this article we will look at infant constipation treatment and how best to deal with constipation when an infant is suffering from it.

The best way in which any parent could treat an infant who is suffering from constipation is by changing the child’s diet. The constipation will not improve without a change of diet and they will also probably be using stool softeners as well.

The goal of any infant constipation treatment is so that the child has 1 or 2 soft stools each day. So why not give them 2 to 4 ounces of water or diluted fruit juice once or twice a day. Or you may want to swap the formula they are drinking at the moment for a soy formula instead.

If however your infant is older than 4 months and suffering from constipation then you may want to try feeding them lots of fiber which are contained in cereals, strained prunes, apricots or spinach.

A great way of helping an infant suffering from constipation is by massaging their stomach. Begin at the belly button and then massage outwards in circles in a clockwise direction. Put some baby oil or cream on your fingers as this will help with the massage. However if your child becomes upset or uncomfortable with the massage then stop it.

Or you try moving your infant’s legs in a cycling motion whilst they are laid on their backs. Just hold their legs and then gently move them in a quick cycling motion. This will cause the stomach muscles to move and this in turn will put gentle pressure on the infant’s intestines and make them move.

Another great way of helping an infant suffering from constipation is to give them a warm bath which will help them to relax and thus their stools will be passed more easily. After the bath and when your infant is more relaxed you could try massaging their stomach again. Also after a bath apply some cream or Vaseline to the area around the infant’s anus. It is important that you do not put a thermometer or anything inside your infant’s anus to stimulate bowel movement as this will only cause damage to your child.

There are a number of different ways as shown above which can be used for infant constipation treatment and as long as you watch what they eat and ensure that they have plenty of fluids they should not suffer with this problem too much.

Copd And Emphysema Self Care Part 1

COPD and Emphysema Self-Care (Part 1) - a knol by Deane Hillsman

Understanding The 4 Stages Of Copd

There are four stages of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Patients may not know that they have a respiratory disease when it first takes hold. COPD comes in the form of a variety of ailments, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

According to COPD International, lung function declines about 5 percent every 10 years in adults over the age of 35. Those with COPD have a significantly higher decrease in lung function. According to American Lung Association statistics, this is one of the top five causes of death among seniors in the United States. The sooner it is diagnosed and treatment begins, the less likely it is to become severe. COPD can be fatal and often serves as a springboard for other serious medical problems, as well. These might include irregular heartbeats, heart failure pneumonia and a collapsed lung.

I - There are four basic stages of the disease. Those with the first, or mild, stage, have few symptoms and are able to function on their own at home. They cough sometimes or occasionally have shortness of breath, but generally do not realize there is a problem with their lungs. Quitting smoking at this stage is extremely beneficial, and can prevent a rapid acceleration of the COPD.

II - Shortness of breath often plagues those with moderate, or Stage II, who are very active and overexert themselves. When at rest, there is little notice of it. Coughing is more regular, but may or may not have mucus associated with it. It may be diagnosed when people with Stage II seek medical attention. There are about 12 million Americans who have been diagnosed with COPD. It is unknown how many actually have the disease, because many cases go undiagnosed.

III - Those in the third, or severe, stage find themselves short of breath more frequently with less exertion. They are less able to exercise or partake in frequent physical activities. They often suspect or know that there is a problem. Those seeking medical treatment are often referred to a healthy living program for patients to learn how to minimize the impact upon their daily life. Home care programs often teach these patients how to improve their lifestyles to increase their life expectancy. An in home health care agency may work with family and household members to help them learn how to assist the patient at this time and as the disease becomes more severe.

IV - Stage IV is a very severe stage of the disease. Those with end-stage COPD are often hospitalized frequently or may require regular homecare services. Oxygen therapy and medications may help make the patient feel better. Those suffering from this condition should avoid cold and smoky surroundings. These patients rarely leave home or do so with great difficulties.

COPD is best slowed down or prevented by never smoking or by avoiding gaseous and unclean air. If emphysema, chronic bronchitis pneumonia or other respiratory diseases are suspected, one should seek medical attention immediately.

Acne Cure Home Remedy -- Natural Remedies For Acne

To say that anyone has arrived at a cure for acne would be to speak too soon and perhaps inadvisably. There likely will never be any kind of ultimate cure for acne. That being said, there are remedies for the condition of acne which seem like a cure for those unlucky enough to suffer the disease. And therefore, the likelihood of finding an acne cure home remedy is a high possibility depending upon which remedy works best for you.

Home remedies are non-commercial remedies which do not involve the purchase of a special drug or ointment at the local drug store. They use common ordinary ingredients which can be found in most households. Home remedies have been around for a long time, long before the pharmaceutical industry began to exploit this market with its synthetic ointments and treatments. Many of these home remedies work with equal if not better results than their pharmaceutical counterparts, not to mention the fact that unlike the majority of their counterparts, they create no adverse side effects for the user.

In order to find an acne cure home remedy, we need to understand just what acne is and what causes it. Acne is the result of a condition which finds skin pores clogged and unable to naturally secrete their oils. Skin follicle ducts contain what is known as sebaceous glands which produce a substance known as sebum (oil). The clogged pore develops a pouch of sebum oil underneath it, causing inflammation of the skin (the red raised area or bump commonly associated with the first stages of acne scarring). At some point, bacteria from dead skin cells begin to inhabit these pouches of excess oil, adding to the inflammation. So now that we know what acne is, we can now seek to find ways that promote a home remedy.

One home remedy method which deals with the prevention of further acne involves using fresh lemon juice on the affected area of skin. One note of caution for those with sensitive skin is that lemon juice will produce a slight stinging sensation. If you can deal with that for a brief period of time, then you will have found an excellent substance for cleansing skin pores. The lemon juice acts as an exfoliate and will help the skin to shed dead skin cells quicker, preventing the dead skin cells from clogging the pores and hence trapping bacteria which then leads to the formation of acne. This can be applied over night and left on till morning when it can be washed off with water, and at the very least, it should be applied to the skin and left for half an hour before washing off.

Another common substance which can be substituted for lemon juice which also has a similar effect to lemon juice is fresh tomato pulp. This can be applied by cutting a tomato in half and appling the pulp of the cut half onto the affected area of the skin. If possible, leave the application on the skin for up to one hour before washing clean with water.

The best way to treat a new acne pimple is to work at drying up the excess oil contained underneath the follicle. One treatment is to use a non-gel toothpaste on the affected area. You would apply a small dab on the area before you go to bed at night and then wash it off in the morning. The toothpaste works like a sponge to dry out the affected area and to dislodge any oil that may be trapped in the pore.

Many people are lead to falsely think that their acne is caused by poor facial hygiene. This is simply not the case at all. We have already touched on what the cause of acne is, and it does not involve inattentiveness to the cleanliness of the face or the affected area. It should be noted here that it is only necessary to wash the face twice a day with a mild soap when attempting to deal with the onset of acne. Over washing the face can cause skin irritation. Once you have washed the face, try not to touch it with dirty hands or fingers as these contain oils and bacteria which may plug up and further infect the pores.

Once you are able to begin reducing the number of inflammed areas on the skin, you may wish to begin dealing with the scarring effect left by this inflammation. One way to begin doing this is by helping the skin to return to a good PH balance. Improving the PH balance of the skin has proven to lead to healthier skin. A fairly common household item that can be used for this treatment which is also a natural PH balancer is common ordinary baking soda. It helps put the skin back into a proper PH balance.

The best way to use baking soda is to make a paste by mixing it with water. Apply to the skin and rub it in gently, letting it dry. Leave on the skin for about fifteen minutes, and remove with warm water. Once removed, use a small amount of moisturizer on the skin as the baking soda treatment will tend to dry the skin. Doing this several times a week will help the skin to remain clear while supporting its natural radiance.

Home Remedies For Acne - Possible Side Effects

Home remedies for acne are varied. You can choose from a tangerine juice treatment, cabbage mask, orange tonic or a watermelon juice treatment. Even tomato, almonds, mint juice, apple tonic, amaranth juice and cucumber lotion are potent home remedies for acne.

This sea of counter medications can benefit you when used wisely. Many resort to home remedies as an extension of the parlour treatments, expensive medicines by the dermatologists or cosmetics claiming to work miracles. However, home remedies can offer a permanent solution to your skin problems.

Anything which is done without proper knowledge of its functioning is bound to hamper your condition. The first requisite of the home remedies for acne is the knowledge of your skin type. There are basically four skin types. The oily, dry, normal and the combination skin are the categories of skin divisions without the knowledge of; there is a possible chance of skin damage. The kind of treatment that is suited for the oily skin may not be conditioned for a dry skin type. Hence, possible side affects to home remedies for acne are aggravated because of lack of knowledge.

Side affects are caused chiefly due to intolerance to a particular ingredient in the medication. Often, in a haste to improve one’s skin conditions, people use constituents without checking whether or not they are tolerant to the particular thing. To prevent the possible side affects, learn about the things that make your concoction. This will keep you from hassles in the near future. However, if the side affects are mild, ensure counter-medications that may help your condition. Also, not all acne scars can be treated using home treatment.

Most acne scars are of a depressed type and spreads deeper into the skin cells. Home remedies may help lighten the scars, but, once the acne heals a skin layer is formed over the depression and the scar becomes permanent. There maybe deep scars called ice pick scars, oval shaped boxcar scars and rolling scars. The permanent solution to scars caused by acne is dependent on the collagen supply to the skin. Check to see whether your home remedies for acne helps fill collagen or not.

Vitamin C helps to boost collagen. If the home remedies for acne are not collagen fillers, they will not help much. A lot is made out of home remedies, but when not used wisely and carefully, you may end up spending a lot of money and effort plus hassles in the form of unwanted side affects.
